On Tuesday, May 14th, the Mobile Health Unit attended the Future Summits of Imec Technology Forum 2019 in Antwerp, Belgium, the internationally considered must-attend conference for those involved in tech solutions for the future. This year, the demo floor covered over 50 live demos of smart solution, with a lot of them focusing on revolutionizing the healthcare industry.
Furthermore, impressive presentations by leading experts from global industry inspired the public with revolutionizing ideas. We were amazed by the enthusiastic talk of the 15-year old Tanmay Bakshi, a Canadian coder, who became a self-taught artificial intelligence and machine learning specialist. With his talk, he convinced the public that healthcare is a field that is really ripe to be enhanced by AI.
Interestingly, two of our partners also presented their idea. Hans Danneels from Byteflies showed how their wearable sensor dots, combined with machine learning, can help chronically ill patients suffering from epilepsy, heart failure, etc. Hans Danneels stated that “If you want to master BIG DATA, you have to be a king in SMALL DATA”. Michiel Rooijakkers from Bloom Technologies presented their wearable pregnancy monitor which can be enabled for personalized prenatal care to predict and prevent complications during pregnancy. Finally Chris Van Hoof from imec showed initial results of a trial for which they collaborate with us and which is being conducted in Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg on chronic kidney patients. The initial results show a good correlation between patients’ fluid balance during hemodialysis and the bioimpedance signal, measured using imec’s wearable sensor. In the future, this sensor could be applied to personalize treatment strategies.
